Georgia Southern surge beats Furman 64-57

STATESBORO, Ga. (AP) — Jelani Hewitt scored 16 points and Ben Drayton 13 as Georgia Southern defeated Furman 64-57 Monday night and took sole possession of second place in the Southern Conference.

The Eagles (11-12, 9-4) outscored Furman 26-13 over the final 15:14 after the Paladins (12-12, 6-7) had gone ahead 44-38, their first lead since the opening minutes.

A pair of 3-pointers by Hewitt tied the game and a Drayton layup put the Eagles ahead 46-44.

Furman briefly regained the lead, 47-46, on a 3-pointer by Bobby Austin, but a layup by Willie Powers began a 13-0 Georgia Southern run, which included three baskets by Eric Ferguson.

Ferguson and Powers scored 11 each for the Eagles and Ferguson had 11 rebounds. Georgia Southern outrebounded Furman 36-30 after being beaten on the boards 42-28 in a 64-54 loss to the Paladins on Jan. 19.

Austin scored 13 points and Brandon Sebirumbi 10 for Furman.
