SALEM, Ore. (AP) — The Oregon Department of Education announced Wednesday that student enrollment decreased slightly for the fifth straight year.
Oregon K-12 public schools have enrolled 560,946 students. That’s down 382 students or less than 1 percent from a year ago.
Superintendent of Public Instruction Susan Castillo says while the number of kids in state schools has changed very little in recent years, there has been an increase in the number of students needing special services and support. These include special education students, students learning to speak English and students receiving free lunches.
Here are 2011-12 enrollment figures for some of the state’s largest school districts and the percentage change from last year:
Portland 46,190 (1.03, Salem-Keizer 40,219 (-0.37%), Beaverton 39,118 (0.98%), Hillsboro 20,909 (0.39%), North Clackamas 17,152 (-1.05%), Eugene 17,102 (-1.92%).
