YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) — Students in the welding class at Eisenhower High School in Yakima are busy making metal flowers for Valentine’s Day.
They use a computer-controlled machine to cut petals from sheet metal. They grind the rough edges and weld the leaves to a metal stem, using piers to twist each one into distinctive art.
The teacher, Gary Kurpgeweit, told the Yakima Herald-Republic (http://is.gd/SnMyze) the rose design evolves with each year’s class.
Money from the flower sales helps supports the school’s welding club. It’s part of SkillsUSA, an organization that promotes education in trade and technical jobs.
