Campbell beats Winthrop 67-58

BUIES CREEK, N.C. (AP) — Lorne Merthie scored 14 points, including knocking down four 3-pointers, to lead Campbell past Winthrop 67-58 on Thursday night.

Trey Freeman added 12 points, Eric Griffin 11 and Darren White 10 for the Camels (17-11, 11-5 Big South Conference), who have won back-to-back contests and three of four.

Campbell led by six points at the break and, even though the Eagles caught back up to lead midway through the second half, outscored Winthrop 37-34 in the final 20 minutes to seal it.

The Camels outshot the Eagles 57.1 percent (24 of 42) to 32.8 percent (20 of 61) from the floor, including a 40 percent mark from 3-point land (6 of 15). The Eagles hit just 18.2 percent of their long-range shots (4 of 22).

Andre Jones finished with 19 points to pace Winthrop (10-16, 7-8), who has lost two straight games.
