Schoolgirls excluded from Dallas movie screening

DALLAS (AP) — A field trip for 5,700 fifth-grade boys in Dallas to see a movie about black fighter pilots in World War II has some questioning why the girls weren’t included.

The boys were taken Thursday to see “Red Tails,” a new movie about the Tuskegee Airmen, the first black pilots to serve in the U.S. military. The girls stayed in classroom and watched “Akeelah and the Bee” about an 11-year-old girl who competed in a national spelling bee.

A spokesman for the Dallas schools says only the boys were taken because space in the theater was limited.

But others are crying foul. Herbert Carter, a Tuskegee Airman who flew 77 missions during World War II, says he’s “almost speechless.” He says the airmen’s story offers lessons for boys and girls.
