PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The U.S. Department of Justice will hold a public forum in Portland later this month as part of its investigation of the city Police Bureau and charges that it uses excessive force in encounters with mentally ill people.
The investigation began last year, and agency officials conducted interviews with members of the public in August.
U.S. Attorney S. Amanda Marshall said in a statement Friday a town hall meeting is planned Feb. 28 at St. John’s Community Center, and department “invites any individual who has specific and recent information they would like to share about their personal interaction with PPB officers.”
The department says it’s trying to determine if there’s a pattern of force that amounts to a violation of civil rights.
