Gardner-Webb’s runs top Virginia Military 77-61

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. (AP) — Tashan Newsome posted a double-double and Gardner-Webb closed the first half with a big run, then opened the second with another run en route to a 77-61 win over Virginia Military Institute Saturday night in Big South Conference play.

Gardner-Webb (11-16, 6-9) trailed 22-14 in the first half after a jumper by VMI’s Brian Brown (15 points). But the Bulldogs scored 11 straight points, closing the half on a 17-2 run to lead 31-24 at intermission. Once Gardner-Webb opened the second half with a 13-0 run to lead 44-24, the Bulldogs coasted home.

Newsome posted a 13-point, 13-rebound double-double. Donta Harper came off the bench to lead Gardner-Webb with 14 points while Stefon Johnson and Laron Buggs added 13 and 10 points, respectively.

VMI was done in by its 3-point shooting. The Keydets (12-13, 7-8) were 6 for 34 from beyond the arc, with Brown hitting half of those treys.
