ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — A film opens Friday about two Eskimo teenagers from Barrow, Alaska, who try to cover up a tragic killing brought on by a drug-fueled fight during a seal hunt.

“On the Ice” was filmed in Barrow in 2010 with novice Inupiat actors.

It was an entry at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and has won several awards at other venues, including best first feature at the Berlin film festival.

“On the Ice” will make its theatrical premiere Friday in New York and the Alaska cities of Anchorage and Fairbanks, then expand to other cities including Los Angeles, Chicago, Seattle and San Francisco.

The film is the work of New York-based director and screenwriter Andrew Okpeaha MacLean, who is part Inupiat and spent much of his youth in Barrow.
