LONDON (AP) — The first county cricketer in England to be prosecuted for fixing part of a match has been sentenced to four months in prison.
Former Essex bowler Mervyn Westfield was jailed Friday after admitting taking $9,200 to intentionally concede runs during a 40 overs English county match in 2009.
Westfield’s attorney, Mark Milliken-Smith, says his client was targeted by former teammate Danish Kaneria, a former Pakistan test player.
Milliken-Smith says Westfield was “less likely … to be able to say no to the club’s international star.”
