PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Portland police say a 40-year-old man armed with a knife who reportedly said he wanted officers to kill him later put down his weapon and surrendered.

A police spokesman said crisis negotiators working with the man’s relatives were able to persuade him to surrender shortly before 5 p.m. Friday.

The man reportedly was visiting from out of town. He was taken to an area hospital. No charges will be filed.

Officers responded shortly after 2 p.m. to a report of an armed suicidal man standing in the middle of a northeast Portland street.

Traffic was temporarily blocked in the area and a nearby school was locked down.
