LOS ANGELES (AP) — Erik Compton keeps coming up clutch with a paycheck on the line.

Compton returned Saturday morning to finish his second round at the Northern Trust Open. He holed a 25-foot par putt on the seventh hole, saved par from short of the eighth green, then made a 20-foot par putt on his final hole for a 72 to make the cut on the number.

At the Sony Open this year, Compton finished birdie-eagle to make the cut on the number.

Texas freshman Jordan Spieth wasn’t so fortunate. After making a 20-foot birdie putt on the par-5 17th to get to 3 over, he blocked his tee shot into the trees on the 18th and three-putted for double bogey.

Phil Mickelson takes a one-shot lead into the third round.
