Howard hangs on to beat Coppin State 70-66

BALTIMORE (AP) — Calvin Thompson and Glenn Andrews came off the bench to score 17 points each to lead Howard to a 70-66 win over Coppin State on Saturday.

Thompson converted 9 of 11 free throws while Andrews was effective from long range, connecting on 4 of 9 from beyond the arc.

Howard (8-19, 5-9 in the Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference) scored the game’s first six points but Coppin State rallied to take its first lead of the game, 19-18, with 7:03 left in the first half.

However, Howard closed the half on a 12-1 run to take a 30-20 lead into halftime.

The Bison led throughout the second half, shooting 12 of 24 from the field during the period and making 13 free throws.

Coppin State (13-13, 8-5) outrebounded the Bison 41-33 but Howard’s bench contributed 42 points, compared to just 20 for the Eagles.

Antonio Williams led Coppin State with 21.
