SEATTLE (AP) — Donors gave more than ever before to the University of Washington last year.

The Seattle Times reports (http://is.gd/rkT5ju ) that private contributions for everything from cancer research to student scholarships hit $334 million, a jump of 17 percent over the previous fiscal year.

Among all universities, that tally ranked 14th in the nation — more than Cornell or the University of California at Berkeley.

Vice president for university advancement Connie Kravas says the school is astounded by the total. Kravas said that among the most generous donors have been philanthropists who made fortunes in the high-tech industry.

Most of the money comes with strings attached and can only be used for certain purposes, not the day-to-day running of the university, so state cutbacks in education funding still concern administrators.

Washington State University received $149 million; Pacific Lutheran University, $28 million; Seattle University, $19 million; and Gonzaga University, $14 million.
