Young scores 27, Houston holds off SMU 62-59

HOUSTON (AP) — Joseph Young scored 27 points and Houston held off a second-half rally for a 62-59 victory over Southern Methodist on Saturday night.

Young connected on four 3-pointers for the Cougars (13-14, 5-9 Conference USA).

Jonathon Simmons scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Houston, and TaShawn Thomas scored 10 points. Jimmie Jones sparked the defense with four steals.

Robert Nyakundi had 24 points and three steals for SMU (12-17, 3-11). Jeremiah Samarrippas had nine assists and Shawn Williams had seven rebounds.

Houston had a 22-6 scoring advantage in the paint but SMU had a 21-16 scoring margin off turnovers and 15-5 off the bench.
