SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Some Oregon lawmakers want to make it illegal to post a job advertisement telling unemployed jobseekers not to apply.
The House is scheduled to vote on the legislation on Monday, and approval there would send it to Gov. John Kitzhaber.
Employers and employment agencies could be fined up to $1,000 if they post a job ad that says applicants will only be considered if they’re currently employed.
Even if it passes, however, employers could still exclude unemployed applicants; they just wouldn’t be able to advertise it.
Proponents say unemployed job applicants shouldn’t face discrimination in their job search.
