OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — The state Senate has approved a plan to form a new committee to respond to the Washington Supreme Court’s recent ruling on school finance.
The resolution passed Monday would establish a joint select committee on school funding, consisting of four lawmakers from both political parties. The resolution heads to the governor’s desk for her signature.
The Supreme Court ruled in January that the state is not fulfilling its constitutional duty in the way it pays for education, by not fully funding basic education and relying too much on local levy dollars.
The court says it will oversee the legislature’s action to fix these problems. The new committee will be in charge of keeping communication open between the Legislature and the Supreme Court.
