FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — The head coach of the Canadian bobsledding team says three athletes have been hospitalized in Germany after their sled slammed into the roof of the track during a training run.
Thursday’s crash took place as the Canadian team was practicing for a World Cup event in Altenberg. Coach Tom de la Hunty says he has “never seen a sled so destroyed in one go” in his 32 years in the sport.
He says pilot Chris Spring is at a hospital in Dresden to have a piece of wood removed from his lower back. Pushman Bill Thomas is at another hospital in Dresden, and Graeme Rinholm is in a hospital in Pirna. A fourth member of the crew, Tim Randall, is not injured.
De la Hunty says he does not have full details of the athletes’ injuries.
