LA CENTER, Wash. (AP) — A 14-year-old southwest Washington middle school student remains hospitalized in critical condition after collapsing at a school basketball practice. La Center School District Superintendent Mark Mansell says Cody Sherrell is “hanging in there.”

Coaches, administrators and parents who rushed to help the boy when he collapsed in cardiac arrest shared their stories on Thursday. Coaches and parents performed CPR.

Basketball coach Tom Rice was one of those who tended the boy before medics arrived. He told reporters “if we in any way helped, I am proud of that fact.”

La Center Middle School Principal David Cooke says Cody was student of the month for October. He describes him as a shy boy who had recently joined both the drama club and the basketball team, which had its first practice Tuesday evening. He collapsed during a break in the practice.
