Winthrop uses deep bench to beat Radford 70-54

ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) — Matt Morgan came off the bench to score 14 points and lead four Winthrop players in double figures as the Eagles defeated Radford 70-54 Thursday night in a Big South Conference game.

Andre Jones added 11 points, Joab Jerome had 10 off the bench and George Valentine had 10 points and 12 rebounds for Winthrop (5-10, 2-2), which outshot Radford 56.9 percent (29 of 51) to 32.7 percent (17 of 52).

R.J. Price scored 19 to lead the Highlanders (3-14, 0-5), who have lost 13 in a row and came in shooting 35.7 percent from the field for the season, 336th out of 338 Division I teams.

Winthrop’s bench outscored Radford’s 32-8 and the Eagles scored 42 points in the paint to just 12 for the Highlanders. Winthrop had a 38-22 rebounding advantage.

Morgan had six points in a 10-0 run that stretched Radford’s lead to 48-33 with 12:15 remaining.
