BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — The coach of Juan Martin Del Potro says the former U.S. Open champion will skip Argentina’s Davis Cup series next month in Germany.
Franco Davin told Friday’s La Nacion newspaper that Del Potro, plagued by injuries the last several years, was bowing out because of concern over the physical effects of playing on the clay surface selected by Germany.
Argentina lost to Spain in last month’s Davis Cup final.
Without Del Potro, Argentina is likely to field a team that includes David Nalbandian, Juan Monaco, Juan Ignacio Chela and Carlos Berlocq in the World Group first round contest.
