WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House says accusations against an American man convicted in an Iranian court of working for the CIA are false.
National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor says the White House is monitoring reports that Amir Mirzaei Hekmati has been sentenced to death by the court. He says if the reports are true, the White House strongly condemns the verdict and will work with U.S. partners “to convey our condemnation to the Iranian government.”
Vietor says allegations that Hekmati worked for or was sent to Iran by the CIA are false. And he says Iran has a history of falsely accusing people of being spies and holding innocent Americans for political reasons.
Vietor called on Iran to release Hekmati without delay.
