Cal Poly pulls away for 66-50 win over UC Irvine

IRVINE, Calif. (AP) — David Hanson had 16 points and 12 rebounds while Will Taylor also scored 16 as Cal Poly defeated UC Irvine 66-50 Thursday night.

Chris Eversley added 11 points and eight rebounds for the Mustangs (11-6, 2-2 Big West), who committed just seven turnovers and outrebounded Irvine 43-34.

Daman Starring led the Anteaters (6-11, 3-2) with 15 points and nine rebounds. Will Davis added 13 points.

Taylor scored the first basket of the second half to break a 24-24 tie and Cal Poly led the rest of the way. Derick Flowers hit a 3-pointer to pull Irvine within 43-39 with 10:58 remaining, but the Mustangs went on an 11-2 run over the next seven minutes to pull away.

The Mustangs shot 43 percent from the field, while Irvine was at 36 percent.
