Western Michigan runs away from Toledo 74-52

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) — Flenard Whitfield scored 19 points and Matt Stainbrook had a double-double to lead Western Michigan past Toledo 74-52 on Saturday.

Whitfield hit 8 of 11 shots and Stainbrook had 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Broncos (8-9, 2-1 Mid-American), who won their second in a row. Austin Richie added 10 points, and Mike Douglas grabbed 10 rebounds.

Julius Brown scored 17 and Rian Pearson 11 for the Rockets (8-9, 0-3) who dropped their third straight.

The Broncos, 7-0 at home, shot 49 percent (30 of 61) to the Rockets’ 36 percent (20 of 56) and doubled Toledo’s rebound total 48-24.

Toledo grabbed an early 8-5 lead before Western Michigan ran off 12 points in a row, keyed by two 3-pointers from Hayden Hoerdemann, for a 17-8 edge.

The Broncos led the rest of the way. The lead peaked at 73-44 on Nate Hutcheson’s 3-pointer with 4:54 left.
