SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — There were no problems at Monday’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade in Spokane.
Police spokeswoman Jennifer DeRuwe says it was a successful event that went off very smoothly.
Extra officers helped maintain security because of a bomb was planted along the route last year. The bomb was found and disabled before it could explode.
The man who admitted building and leaving the bomb in a backpack, Kevin Harpham, pleaded guilty to attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction and a hate crime. He was sentenced last month to 32 years in federal prison.
Police urged a large turnout at this year’s parade as an opportunity for citizens to speak out against hate.
