Record number of people using Eugene airport

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Eugene Airport had a record number of passengers last year — more than 780,000.

The Eugene Register-Guard reports more people in the airport’s market area are flying out of Eugene instead of driving up to Portland.

Traffic to the Rose Bowl at the end of the year and to and from the Bowl Championship Series at the start of 2011 also helped boost the numbers. But officials say the airport would have set a record even without football.

The airport has been marketing itself heavily to people in the Eugene area.

The Register-Guard says the previous record was set in 1997, when 769,692 passengers traveled through Eugene Airport.
