Sacred Heart edges Quinnipiac 78-75

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (AP) — Louis Montes scored 28 points and Shane Gibson had 23 to lead Sacred Heart to a 78-75 Northeast Conference victory over Quinnipiac on Thursday night.

The last of the game’s 15 lead changes came on Gibson’s three-point play with 4:18 remaining that gave the Pioneers (9-11, 3-4) a 67-66 lead.

Two free throws by Montes put Sacred Heart ahead 76-73 with 31 seconds left, and Evan Kelly added a free throw after James Johnson missed a 3-pointer for the Bobcats (9-9, 2-5). Kelly added a final free throw after missed shots by Johnson and Ike Azotam.

Montes made 9 of 11 free throws as Sacred Heart sank 22 free throws to Quinnipiac’s 13 to help overcome the Bobcats’ 45-34 rebounding advantage.

Dave Johnson scored 18 points for Quinnipiac, James Johnson had 16 and Azotam 15.

Sacred Heart also won the teams’ Dec. 1 meeting in Hamden, Conn., 68-55.
