Villanova beats St. John’s 79-76 in OT

NEW YORK (AP) — Maalik Wayns scored 28 points, including two free throws with 22 seconds left in overtime, and Villanova beat St. John’s 79-76 at Madison Square Garden on Saturday.

Wayns, who averaged 32 points in the Wildcats’ last two games, made the two free throws to give Villanova a 79-76 lead. Sir’Dominic Pointer missed a 3-pointer with 3 seconds left that could have tied the game.

Dominic Cheek had 20 points and JayVaughn Pinkston added 13 points and 12 rebounds for Villanova (10-10, 3-5 Big East), which won consecutive games for the first time since opening the season 4-0.

Freshman D’Angelo Harrison had a season-high 28 points for the Red Storm (8-11, 2-6), who lost their fourth straight and sixth of seven.
