Appalachian State defeats Western Carolina 84-72

BOONE, N.C. (AP) — Jamal Trice scored 21 points and Omar Carter added 20 to help Appalachian State defeat Western Carolina 84-72 on Saturday.

The Mountaineers (8-10, 4-4 Southern Conference ) and Catamounts (9-11, 3-4) both turned it over 14 times, but Appalachian State scored 24 points off those miscues, compared to 17.

Appalachian State led 33-29 and Western Carolina tied it at 59 on Harouna Mutombo’s layup with 6:24 remaining. The Mountaineers then scored seven straight, five coming from Trice, over the next 1:58. They would lead by no less than six points and by as many as 15 the rest of the way.

Isaac Butts added 11 points and Andre Williamson had 10 points and 11 rebounds for Appalachian State, which won its third straight.

Trey Sumler scored 17 points, Brandon Boggs 16 and Tawaski King and Mutombo had 13 each for the Catamounts.
