STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — State College residents were expressing shock and sadness after the death of longtime Penn State coach Joe Paterno.

At a Mass on Sunday on campus before Paterno’s family announced he died, a priest asked worshippers to pray for Paterno.

Among those at Mass was Jo Dumas. She’s a senior lecturer at Penn State. She was wearing a T-shirt that read, “Coach Paterno, only one thing: Thank you.”

She learned after Mass that Paterno had died and was tearing up at the news. She calls Paterno “part of our family” and says, “We love what he’s done for the university.”
