PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Oregon has submitted the application it promised for a waiver from the requirements of the No Child Left Behind education law.
Gov. John Kitzhaber said in a statement Monday that 11 states have already asked for waivers from the test-based standards law pushed by former President George W. Bush, and Oregon is among 28 more expected in a second wave of applications.
The Obama administration has begun offering the waivers to states that agree to reforms it favors.
Oregon proposes a statewide report card that would measure achievement compacts with the state’s 197 school districts. Kitzhaber said the state expects a response in the spring to the request submitted to the U.S. Department of Education.
