SEATTLE (AP) — The avalanche danger is making travel difficult or impossible through Snoqualmie and Stevens passes — the two main east-west highway routes through the Washington Cascades.
Both were closed Tuesday evening. The Transportation Department reopened Interstate 90 through Snoqualmie Pass Wednesday morning, but it has no estimate on reopening Highway 2 through Stevens Pass.
Spokesman Jeff Adamson told KOMO Radio it was the rain on top of snow that brought down avalanches at Stevens Pass, and it’s too dangerous for crews to clear the snow.
The department says the avalanche danger will likely close Snoqualmie Pass again sometime Wednesday.
The National Weather Service forecasts another 11 to 17 inches of snow by Thursday morning in the passes.
