GRAND RONDE, Ore. (AP) — Oregon State Police say two people and a dog have been rescued from an SUV that left a highway, slid 30 feet down an embankment, hit a tree and ended up in three feet of water in a creek.
Firefighters pulled 57-year-old Gertrude Dickey of Willamina and her 67-year-old brother, Monty Dickey, from the vehicle Friday. She suffered minor injuries. Her brother was flown to Salem Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Their Labrador dog was unhurt.
State police Sgt. Brad Hessel says a Polk County inmate work crew witnessed the crash and tried to help but couldn’t free the occupants.
In Salem, fire crews swam Friday afternoon into Pringle Creek to rescue a female kayaker who had become stranded on a debris pile. Fire Battalion Chief Bob Davis says the woman suffered mild hypothermia.
