SEATTLE (AP) — As work progresses on a tunnel to replace the Alaskan Way Viaduct in Seattle, homeless campers are being told they can no longer sleep under the viaduct.

A two-block area near Pioneer Square was swept Monday morning, but no one had to be physically evicted.

Washington Transportation Department spokeswoman KaDeena Yerkan says no one was encountered, apparently because the homeless heeded “no trespassing” signs posted Friday.

She says the area under the viaduct is being cleared of transients because of traffic and construction activity.

The executive director of the Seattle-King County Coalition on Homelessness, Alison Eisenger, told seattlepi.com (http://is.gd/VZ1cN2 ) an estimated 100 to 150 people sleep under and around the highway, but one city outreach worker estimated 10 to 50.
