Letter: Marriage is simply a contract

In a Jan. 28 letter, Lee Jennings suggested that the state “Get out of the marriage” business.

He suggests marriage was originally a religious event, but marriage originated as a business contract. Men sold their daughters or men were offered assets to marry a man’s daughter.

Marriage was also a way to end conflict by marrying the sons and daughters of warring tribes or nations.

Only later on did religion get into the marriage business.

Thousands, if not millions, of people should not have to give up the word “marriage” to appease those who see it as religious only. If religious people wish to have their own word for their religious unions, let them find a new word to describe their relationship. Maybe they could call it “Religiage.”
