SEATTLE (AP) — Mike Zunino can’t wait to get the whirlwind of being honored for his college career over with so his pro career in the Seattle Mariners organization can begin.
Unlike previous years when top draft picks rarely saw the minor-league field right away, Zunino’s debut is coming soon.
The Mariners introduced Zunino on Tuesday, a day after the No. 3 overall pick in June’s amateur draft signed his contract with Seattle.
Zunino’s trip to Seattle will be brief. Already having traveled twice to the Midwest to accept awards for his stellar college career at Florida, Zunino is off later this week to the Golden Spikes Awards, where he’s a finalist. Then he’ll make a quick trip to Kansas City, Mo., and the All-Star Game before starting his career with Single-A Everett.
