Errant signal prompts rescue response near Bend

BEND, Ore. (AP) — A camper who was carrying an emergency locator signal didn’t know it accidentally went off in his backpack.

Lance Peterson of Battle Ground and his two sons, ages 11 and 13, were setting up camp Thursday evening in the Devils Lake area west of Bend, Ore., when Deschutes County search and rescue and medical teams arrived.

KTVZ reports that at that point Peterson realized the locator beacon activated without the campers’ knowledge.

The sheriff’s office says it will continue to respond to such signals, but it’s asking users to monitor the gear so it’s only used in true emergencies.
