GALWAY, Ireland (AP) — American boat Puma won the in-port series to close out the Volvo Ocean Race on Saturday, the 39,270 nautical mile marathon which was won by French entry Groupama.

Franck Cammas’ Groupama was confirmed as the winner after the Leg 9 placings from France to Ireland on Tuesday.

Ken Read, the oldest sailor in the fleet at 51, finished his last race in style with a start-to-finish victory in the eight-mile Galway leg, beating Camper into second place.

He says of the in-shore race that to compete “against the best sailors in the world and come out on top is all we can ask for.”

Read was runner-up in the last Volvo Ocean Race in 2009, and finished third overall this year.
