A Ridgefield company is expected to begin work on the Cougar Creek Bridge replacement project this month.

The Board of Clark County Commissioners has awarded a $755,627 contract to the lowest bidder among six, Conway Construction Co. The high bid was $998,359.

With design and other items, the total project is expected to cost approximately $1.4 million, according to Jeff Mize, Clark County Public Works public information outreach manager. Federal funds will provide about 70 percent of that, and the remainder will come from the county road fund. When work begins this summer on the bridge project, a short section of Washougal River Road will be closed for approximately 15 weeks. It will involve the replacement of the 27-foot-long bridge that crosses Cougar Creek, just upstream from its confluence with the Washougal River.

“It will be a significant project,” Mize said, during a recent open house at Washougal City Hall.

More than 3,500 mailers have been sent to residents who could be affected by the detour.

During construction, traffic will detour around the construction zone, between mileposts 5.1 and 5.2. The date when the bridge will be closed and the detour will begin has not been finalized.

A map of the area is at www.clark.wa.gov/publicworks/roads/cougar.html. For more information, call Mize at 397-6118, Ext. 4398.
