NEW YORK (AP) — Belmont Stakes winner Union Rags has a minor ligament injury in his left front leg and will be sidelined for the rest of the year.
The veterinarian treating Union Rags at Fair Hill Training Center in Maryland says in a release Wednesday that the colt has a “small lesion of his high suspensory.”
Kathy Anderson adds that the prognosis for a full return to racing next year is “excellent.” Anderson says the injury likely occurred after the colt’s most recent workout on July 6.
The injury to Union Rags leaves racing without any of its Triple Crown race winners. Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner I’ll Have Another was retired with a tendon injury a day before the Belmont, ending his chance to become the first Triple Crown champion in 34 years.
