DENVER (AP) — Colorado Rockies first baseman Todd Helton has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with right hip inflammation, one of a series of moves by the team as it resumes play after the All-Star break.
Catcher Wil Nieves also was also placed on the disabled list Friday because of turf toe in his right foot and right-handed pitcher Tyler Chatwood was optioned to Double-A Tulsa.
The Rockies activated catcher Ramon Hernandez from the disabled list. Hernandez had missed 42 games while recovering from a left hand injury.
The Rockies filled the roster vacancies by purchasing the contracts of infielder Josh Rutledge from Tulsa and right-hander Mike Ekstrom from Triple-A Colorado Springs.
