ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — The Boston Red Sox have activated center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury from the disabled list and inserted him into their starting lineup.

Ellsbury was the leadoff hitter for Friday night’s game against Tampa Bay. He has been out since hurting his right shoulder on April 13 while trying to break up a double play.

Boston manager Bobby Valentine says he doesn’t have a long-term plan for Ellsbury and will take it day by day.

Ellsbury was the runner-up in the AL MVP voting last season and Boston has sorely missed him in the lineup.

To make room on the roster for Ellsbury, pitcher Justin Germano was designated for assignment.
