BALTIMORE (AP) — The Detroit Tigers have placed rookie left-hander Drew Smyly on the 15-day disabled list with a strained muscle in his right side.

The move, made Saturday, is retroactive to July 7. In his last appearance, Smyly struck out a career-high 10 batters in a 4-2 win over Kansas City.

Smyly said he experienced pain in his side during that start and thought it would go away.

A second round draft pick in the 2010 amateur draft, Smyly is 4-3 with a 4.42 ERA in 15 starts.

Detroit manager Jim Leyland says rookie right-hander Jacob Turner will be recalled Tuesday from Triple-A Toledo to start for Smyly against the Los Angeles Angels.

To fill the void in the roster, the Tigers recalled right-handed reliever Luis Marte from Toledo.
