WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington Wizards waived troubled forward Andray Blatche on Tuesday, designating him as the team’s amnesty player.

The 25-year-old Blatche averaged 9.9 points and 5.4 rebounds over seven seasons. Blatche was drafted in the second round in 2005 and had a series of on- and off-court incidents that prevented him from reaching stardom.

The Wizards removed the $23 million remaining on his contract from their salary cap.

Team president Ernie Grunfeld said waiving Blatche will give the team “financial flexibility.”

Last season, Blatche played in just 26 games, averaging 8.5 points. He was banished from the team in March by coach Randy Wittman to work on his conditioning. Earlier in the season, Blatche missed time with a calf injury.
