PHOENIX (AP) — The Houston Rockets told Luis Scola they were going in a different direction, so he wasn’t surprised when they designated him as their amnesty player.

What did catch him off-guard was the team that had the winning bid for his services: the Phoenix Suns.

Bolstering their increasingly crowded frontcourt, the Suns put forth the winning bid for Scola on Sunday.

The rugged Argentine Olympian is the latest player to join the Suns since point guard and two-time league MVP Steve Nash went to the Los Angeles Lakers in a sign-and-trade deal. Phoenix also signed free agent forward Michael Beasley and Nash’s one-time backup, Goran Dragic, but lost out on guard Eric Gordon when New Orleans matched their offer sheet.

Scola averaged 15.5 points and 6.4 rebounds with the Rockets last season.
