Local ball: Columbia advances to Western Regional

Columbia Little League junior baseball all-stars claimed the District 4 berth to the Western Regional with a 7-1 win over Fort Vancouver in the title game Saturday at Columbia Little League.

Junior baseball is for ages 13-14.

Propstra Stadium is the site for the Western Regional beginning July 31. The winner will advance to the Little League Junior World Series in Taylor, Mich., in August.

9-10 baseball — Salmon Creek won again when it mattered most.

Its fourth straight win — all loser-out games — denied Federal Way a state title as Salmon Creek rolled to a 10-0 victory Saturday at Auburn.

The Salmon Creek and Federal Way play again at noon today with the winner claiming the state title.

10-11 baseball — Federal Way eliminated Cascade 11-8 on Friday at the state tournament at Mill Creek.

Major (11-12) baseball — Central Vancouver dropped its opening game of the state tournament Saturday at Walla Walla, losing to Richland 9-4.

Richland benefitted from a solo home run in the first inning and a three-run homer in the second.

Central Vancouver will play a loser-out game on Monday.

Glenwood opened against South Kitsap on Saturday afternoon. There was no report from that game.

9-10 softball — Gig Harbor defeated South Snohomish for a second time, 8-5, to win the state title Saturday in the tournament played at Columbia Little League.

Babe Ruth baseball

14s state tournament — Hazel Dell Metro dropped its opening game of pool play at Elma, losing to Mt. St. Helens 4-1 on Saturday.

Hazel Dell Metro will face Twin Cities of Centralia-Chehalis at noon today in the second of its three pool play games.

15s state tournament — The KWRL team of Woodland-Ridgefield-La Center fell 6-4 to the Twin Cities team of Centralia-Chehalis in the pool play opener at Castle Rock on Saturday.KWRL faces Midland at 6 p.m. today in the second of three pool play games.

High school

The Vancouver Storm Devils defeated Columbia River 9-3 Saturday to claim the Clark County High School Summer League title.

The Skyview-based team went 4-0 in the eight-team double-elimination tournament held at both Skyview and Columbia River.

Columbia River worked quickly Saturday to eliminate Camas 3-0 in 1 hour, 5 minutes to reach the title game.
