LONDON (AP) — Britain’s government has opted to deploy 1,200 more troops to protect Olympic venues, after the security contractor’s failure to supply enough guards.

The fresh troops come only three days before Friday’s opening ceremony and mean some 18,200 military personnel are now involved in some capacity in securing the London games.

Thousands of British soldiers have been sent on short notice to fill a gap in guards after the security firm G4S acknowledged it would not be able to provide the promised number of security personnel.
