DORKING, England (AP) — Taylor Phinney has been focusing on the upcoming week all summer.
The American cyclist didn’t take part in the grueling Tour de France, instead using the past couple months to train for Saturday’s Olympic road race and next week’s time trial.
It makes sense that Phinney would put special emphasis on the Olympics, at least more so than many other top cyclists. His parents are both medalists — Davis Phinney won bronze at the 1984 Los Angeles Games, and Connie Carpenter-Phinney won gold the same year.
Phinney has already had a big year, winning the opening time trial at the Giro d’Italia, but he says nothing would compare to winning an Olympic medal, just like mom and dad.
