Letter: Reflect on Olson’s position

The Columbian
Published: July 27, 2012, 5:00pm

It was interesting to read the July 11 Columbian story “District 17 hopefuls disagree on most of the top issues” featuring the candidates’ position on marriage equality. Republican Julie Olson is opposed; Democrat Monica Stonier supports it. Olson uses the same, old talking point of being against redefining marriage.

In 1920, did we “redefine” voting by including women, or did we just extend access to include women, so Olson has the right to vote today? Approving Referendum 74 this November will likewise extend access to civil marriage to include same-sex couples, not redefine marriage.

I hope Olson and every American will reflect what “all men are created equal” truly means.
