LONDON (AP) — Two-time world champion Giorgia Bronzini and a powerhouse American team headline the wide-open field for the women’s road race on Sunday.
Bronzini is considered the favorite, but the Italian was quick to point out that Shelley Olds of the U.S. is among several riders who could challenge her.
If anything, the men’s road race Saturday proved how unpredictable the Olympics can be.
The heavily favored British team of Mark Cavendish was unable to close down a late breakaway, leaving Alexander Vinokourov to win a surprising gold medal.
The women’s race covers the same course as the men’s race, though fewer circuits of Box Hill means it will be considerably shorter. It still finishes on the Mall with Buckingham Palace providing a stunning backdrop.
