BOSTON (AP) — Boston Red Sox outfielder Ryan Sweeney is expected to miss the rest of the season after fracturing his left knuckle when he punched a door.
Boston placed him on the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday and recalled outfielder Ryan Kalish from Pawtucket. Right-handed reliever Clayton Mortensen also was recalled from the Triple-A team.
Asked if Sweeney would miss the rest of the season, general manager Ben Cherington said, “it seems that way.”
Sweeney underwent surgery on the knuckle of his left pinkie on Tuesday. He was hurt Monday night when he punched the door after returning to the dugout following his groundout in his fourth at-bat of Boston’s 7-3 win over the Detroit Tigers. Cody Ross finished the game in right field.
